Newport Coast Students in Stitches
Jon Scieszka loves to make kids laugh. Some of his well known books include The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales, The True Story of the Three Little Pigs and Math Curse. He is also the author of the Time Warp Trio series.
Jon brought humor as he shared about growing up with five brothers and serving as an elementary and middle school teacher. NCE students were enraptured.
Thank you to Mrs. Stokes for coordinating this author's visit and to Mrs. Alex Uhl, the owner of Whale of a Tale, Childrens Books, at the Irvine Spectrum. Mrs. Uhl continues to bring Newport Coast authors who inspire our children.
The Coyote Store Holds Grand Opening
The Coyote Store had its grand opening on Thursday and Friday. Teachers have been recognizing Honorable, Organized, and Wise behavior in their classrooms and on campus through our “Catch-a-Coyote” incentive program. With Coyote pride, students joined their classmates and obtained their rewards for exemplary behavior. Smiling students, school staff, and parent volunteers had a great time! Some of our wise students chose to save their Catch-a-Coyotes until the next store opening in hopes of earning enough for their ideal purchase. Everyone should be proud of their work to make the store concept come to fruition. This is just one part of developing honorable, organized, wise leaders.
I am proud of our NCE teachers and staff. They are committed to each of your children learning at high levels. As you learned at Back to School Night, there are a number of initiatives including changes in English Language Arts, Math, and a new district-wide data management system. Our teachers are taking in all this information and providing the ideal program for our children. To learn more about the new Common Core Standards and these initiatives, visit the website at: https://nmusd-ca.schoolloop.com/ccss
This week I had the privilege of meeting with the Pacific Symphony Class Act team as we plan our year of music instruction through this PTA funded program. The students will thoroughly enjoy this year’s composer. The fireworks are going off and the United Airlines theme song is playing as I announce our composer: George Gershwin. Yes, Gershwin! Hopefully Rhapsody in Blue, Summertime, and other classic Gershwin songs will be hummed in your household. Our Class Act musician is Robert Slack, a percussionist. Given Mr. Slack’s percussion instruction, we may hear garage drum sets booming throughout Newport Coast.
